A Method Statement can be an effective way to plan and communicate how work will be carried out safely, particularly for higher-risk, complex or unusual activities. RAMS are also commonly requested by clients, contractors, principal contractors or site management.

A Risk Assessment focuses on identifying hazards, assessing the risks and deciding what precautions are needed to protect people. RAMS combine this Risk Assessment with a Method Statement explaining how the work will be organised and carried out safely.

If you only need to assess and record the risks, a Risk Assessment may be sufficient. Where you also need to clearly document the working method or sequence of work, RAMS provide both documents together.

RAMS should be prepared and reviewed by someone who understands the work being carried out, the hazards involved and the precautions needed to control the risks. Relevant workers should also understand the RAMS and the safe working arrangements they are expected to follow.

This does not necessarily mean starting again from scratch, as much of the existing information may still apply. Check for any differences in the site, people involved, equipment, materials, hazards, other contractors and working methods, then update the RAMS where needed so they accurately reflect the work being carried out.
